One of the hottest areas where small molecules are needed is for reprogramming/induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell research.  Small molecules that could replace reprogramming transcription factors to generate iPS cells from somatic cells would be most desirable and have a huge impact on biomedical and clinical research.
