the buzz, social impact of nanotechnology - nanowiki #4
Even if scientists often ignore it, The truth is that the world does not change only because of the introduction of a new technology. Technology permeates social networks, so the applications which develop, are a mixture of both social and technical forces. If society welcomes a given technology and finds uses for it, this technology shall survive. When social acceptance does not take place, the new technology dies, no matter how good It may be; The key to prevent the promises of a better world from dying into oblivion is to enable society to have access to the information. http://www.nanowiki.info

scales, how big is small? - nanowiki #3
How big is the small? A simple calculation is enough. In a glass of water there are more than 6 x 10^23 molecules. If each molecule has close to a nanometer of diameter And we build a chain of the thickness of a single molecule with all the molecules in that glass of water, We can go from 1023 times 10-12 Km to 1011 km, That is, enough to cover a thousand times the distance to the sun http://www.nanowiki.info

history, nanoparticles before nanotechnology - nanowiki #2
Nanoparticles existed before nanotechnology. Every time a volcano roars, carbon nanotubes and fullerenes are formed. This happens as well when forests, Or oil, burn. The thermodegradation of organic matter generates nanostructures And, indeed, biological processes involve nanoparticles, Such as magnetosomes, which function as bacterian compasses, Or ferritin, an iron reserve. Sometimes humans have taken advantage of nanoparticles without knowing it. A proof o this are the traces of pigments found in the alveoli of 5000-year-old mummies, Nanometric titanium dioxide used presumably in tattoos, Nanoparticles produced spontaneously when mixing oil and natural clay. Or spontaneously when mixing of aluminosilicates and metallic salts at high temperatures, AS it happens in the stained-glass windows of churches Where, for instance, yellow is made of nanoparticles of non-radioactive uranium oxide. http://www.nanowiki.info

imagine, a new world is coming - nanowiki #1
Imagine. A new world is coming. A new world based on the knowledge of matter at a molecular scale, reserved to organic matter until now. Intelligent, modular, fully recyclable, environmentally friendly materials which consume little energy. All of them at the nanometric scale: The scale of the molecules building the cell. http://www.nanowiki.info
