Self assembly

The spontaneous organization of components into an ordered, stable structure based on favorable interactions between the components. Self assembly often is a result of non-covalent interactions such as hydrogen bonds or van der Waals interactions.

Some common examples of self assembly are self-assembled monolayers of alkanethiols on gold, alkanes on graphite, the hydrogen bonding between base pairs in DNA, and lipid bilayers.
